Course contents (core content level)

Basic network terminology relating network protocols: Local-Area Networks (LANs) and Wide-Area Networks (WANs), networking models: Open System Interconnection (OSI) model and TCP/IP model, the basics of Transport Layer protocols TCP and UDP, Ethernet operation, basics of Ethernet switching, collision domains and broadcast domains, Internet Protocol (IP) addressing, basics of subnetting and masks, static assignment of an IP address.

Course contents (additional)

Address Resolution Protocol (ARP), Structured Cabling, twisted pair cable testing terminology and concepts: bandwidth, throughput, more details on 10/100/1000/10 G versions of Ethernet, Application Layer: Domain Name Server

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

After completing the unit, the student understands basic terminology relating reference models and LANs, the student knows the basics of Ethernet operation and Ethernet switching, and the basics of IP addressing and IP subnetting.

Core content level learning outcomes (skills)

Upon completion of the course, students is able to select the twisted pair cable types straight-through, cross connect and rollover. The student is able to connect a workstation to an Ethernet network, calculate subnet and set the workstation?s TCP/IP parameters and use ping to test network reachability.
