Descriptions

Prerequisites

C0016 Local Area Networks

Course contents (core content level)

Mathematical ways to understand and evaluate function and performance of Local Area Networs (LANs), that is: shared and switched 10/100/1000/10000 Mbit/s Ethernet media access, collisions, backoff algorithm, maximum frame rate and user information capacity on 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps Ethernet networks based upon different frame lengths.

Course contents (additional)

Mathematical methods to evaluate Pure and Slotted ALOHA throughput, evaluation of layer 2 inter LAN traffic throughput capacity. Dimensioning basics of digital bandwidth needed for Access, Distribution and Core Layers links.

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

After completing the unit, the student understands the basic mathematical methods to evaluate Ethernet performance, medium access, collision types, delay depended on switching modes, half-duplex 10 Mbit/s and 100 Mbit/s Ethernet Configuration.

Core content level learning outcomes (skills)

Upon completion of the course, student is able to develop a network traffic estimate, which is based on the user activities performed, student is able to estimate Ethernet traffic overhead and user data throughput.
