Descriptions

Prerequisites

Either secondary school (ninth grade) mathematics and Preparatory course in mathematics or upper secondary school mathematics (advanced course level).

Course contents (core content level)

Rules for simplifying mathematical expressions. Methods to solve most common simple equations. Graphs of elementary functions and simple modifications of them. Solving exponential and logarithmic equations. Solving group of linear equations. Matrices and their basic operations. Problems (eg. in electrical circuits) leading to systems of linear equations. Solving completely most common trigonometric equations.

Plane vectors and their use in geometrical and physical problems. Space vectors and their dot and cross product with applications.

Complex numbers and their operations. The connection between sinusoidal signals and complex numbers. Analysis of alternating current circuits by using complex numbers.

Course contents (additional)

Graphical addition, subtractions, multiplication and divisins of graphs of functions. Different methods to evaluate determinants. Methos to find the inverse of a given matrix. Exponential form of complex numbers.

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

The student knows graphs of most common functions. The student has an idea of possible complications arising when solving equations and systems of equations and knows how to handle these situations . The student knows that vectors can be applied in many areas in physics and technical applications. The student can see the connection between complex numbers and alternating current circuits.

Core content level learning outcomes (skills)

Without calculating anything, the student can sketch the most common functions. The student is able to manipulate expressions correctly. He or she is able to solve relatively simple equations and systems of equations. The student is able to use vectors and their operations (up to the use of dot and cross products). The student is able to use different forms of complex numbers and transform from one form into another. He or she is able to apply complex arithmetics to problems in electrical circuits.
