Descriptions

Prerequisites

Course contents (core content level)

Laboratory-scale synthesis and analysis in organic chemistry, as well as the tools, equipment, methods and techniques required.

Course contents (additional)

Detailed understanding of the mechanisms of organic synthesis reactions.

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

After completion of this course the student understands the principles of the following methods and analytical techniques:
- recrystallisation
- (vacuum) distillation
- chromatography (TLC, HPLC, GC)
- polarimetry
- refractometry
- spectroscopy (UV and FTIR-spectroscopy)
In addition, the student knows and understands how to influence the steps, rates and yield of an organic reaction.

Core content level learning outcomes (skills)

After completion of this course the student is able to use glassware, vessels and tools commonly used in practical organic chemistry. He can also apply the important precautions with regard to safety in a laboratory for organic chemistry as well as the ways how to dispose of organic waste. In addition, the student is able to plan and assemble experimental set-ups commonly used in organic synthesis and analysis. He can also qualitatively assess possible sources of error in practical laboratory experiments and is able to use the following equipment:
- a heating device for the determination of melting point
- refractometer
- polarimeter
- FTIR spectrophotometer
