Descriptions

Prerequisites

Course contents (core content level)

Biochemistry and microbiology and biotechnology and their significance in general, rough classification of organisms and cell theory, appearance of different microbes and their specific properties, identification of microbes, contents of microbes, microbial growth and its requirements and kinetics, prevention of microbial growth, procedures in microbiology laboratory, composting and biological waste-water-treatment, basic biochemistry of sugars and carbohydrates and amino acids and proteins, properties and functions and applications of enzymes, practical procedures in microbiology laboratory

Course contents (additional)

The function of microbes and industrial applications of microbiology with more details, the classification and naming of enzymes, factors affecting the structure of proteins

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

After completion of this course the student understands negative effects of microbes and the probality of these effects and the potential benefits of microbes. The student knows, how the negative effects can be avoided or minimized. The student is famililar with the properties and reactions of the most important classes of biochemical compounds and knows the most important classes of commercial enzymes and their applications

Core content level learning outcomes (skills)

After completion of this course the student is able to apply knowledge on microbiology and biochemistry into process technology. The student can estimate growth rates of different microbes and sterilization effects of different heat treatments. The student knows how to work in microbiology laboratory and how to use the most common laboratory equipment and procedures.
