Course contents (core content level)
· Architecture and operation of circuit switched public telecommunication network, e.g., PSTN,
· A/D conversion and PCM for speech· Decibel (dB)-käsite and it?s use in telecommunication
· Impact of distance and frequency to radio wave attenuation
· Theoretical maximum data rate over a channel with given bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio

· Overview of telecommunication signals in time and frequency domain
· Characteristics and applications for different transmission media, such as copper cable, optical fiber and radio path
· Transmission systems for different transmission media
· Carrier modulation methods, line codes and their characteristics
· Local Area Networks and fast data transmission

Student gets basic understanding about communications networks and their operation. He/she knows fundamental limitations for information transmission and characteristics of different transmission channels.

Student will be able to estimate feasibility of different transmission methods, systems and media for a given communication demand. He/she has basic understanding of telecommunications for later studies.

Two intermediate exams and assessment of the homework project. In order to pass the course the student must successfully complete the intermediate exams and the homework project.
