Course contents (core content level)
Crystal structure, cubic unit cells, Miller indices, classification of crystal defects, electrical properties of semiconductors, band structure, intrinsic and doped semiconductor, number of charge carriers, pn junction, clean rooms, manufacturing of silicon wafers and ICs.
Course contents (additional)
Properties of crystal defects, Fermi level, ultra pure water in semiconductor industry, calculation of the electrical properties of semiconductors, calculation of some typical process parameters in semiconductor manufacturing.
Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)
Students learn typical electrical and physical properties of semiconductors needed in microelectronics. Students know the principles of manufacturing silicon wafers and ICs.
Core content level learning outcomes (skills)
Students can calculate number of charge carriers in semiconductors in simplified cases, electrical conductivity of semiconductor and mobilities of charge carriers. Students can explain behavior of pn junction at different bias voltages.
