Course contents (core content level)

VoIP principle and protocol stack, operation of RTP and RTCP protocols, SIP and H.323 signalling, operation of IP telephone system components, dimensioning of an IP telephone network, central QoS functions, setting up an example system

Advantages and problems of IP telephony, ENUM, CTI, voice quality measurements, QoS methods and configurations

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

After completing the unit, the student will know the operation principles of IP telephony technology, central VoIP protocols, system components and configuration principles. The student will know requirements of real time applications to unified IP network and basic QoS solutions.

Core content level learning outcomes (skills)

The student will be able to calculate bandwidth required by IP telephony system, configure a simple IP telephony system and use protocol analyzer to examine packet traffic.

Assessment weighting and grading

Theoretical and practical learning results are tested with a written examination, and with laboratory working and reports. For passing the course, acceptable laboratory working and reports, and a sufficient total weighted score for laboratory works, excercises and exam is needed.
