Course contents (core content level)

Basic terminology relating network security: threaths, vulnerabilities, attacks, security policy, trust, identity, filtering, access control. Network security technologies and methods applied in the IP-networks:
· Applying security policy based on organization’s assessment
· Advanced configuration, monitoring and troubleshooting of routers and firewalls
· Site-to-Site VPN between routers and firewalls
· Remote access VPN to routers and firewalls
· AAA installation and configuration.

Course contents (additional)

Resiliency in network security. Digital certificates in authentication and encryption.

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

Familiarise students to design and implement security solutions that will reduce the risk of revenue loss and vulnerability. The particular emphasis is on:
· Security policy design and management
· Security technologies, products and solutions
· Firewall and secure router design, installation, configuration and maintenance
· AAA implementation using routers and firewalls
· VPN implementation using routers and firewalls.
After completing the unit, the student understands basic terminology relating network security. The student knows the basics of planning security, security technologies and methods applied in IP-networks.

Upon completion of the course, students is able to plan, configure and manage the most common security technologies applied in IP-networks.

Theoretical and practical learning results are tested with On-line assignments during the unit, with a practical network implementation excercise, laboratory examination and theory exam. To pass the course, an acceptable excercises, laboratory examinationsand theory examinations are needed.
