Course contents (core content level)
Arrangement of atoms and the main crystal structures in metals. Lattice defects and their effect on metal properties.
Phases, binary phase diagrams and solidification of metal alloys.
Mechanism of plastic deformation and strengthening principles of metals.
Phases in iron-carbon alloys and their mechanical properties, TTT-diagrams.
Recovery of cold worked metal alloys, strain ageing and work hardening.
Performance of common heat treatments and their effect on the mechanical properties of metal alloys.
Common alloying elements of steels and the aims of their use.
Course contents (additional)
Ternary phase diagrams, thermomechanical treatments.

During the course students will adopt metallic microstructures and comprehend their effect on the mechanical properties of metal alloys. They know how metal alloy properties can be changed by processing.

Students will be able to exploit metal alloy properties achieved by appropriate alloying and processing and they will be able to improve the alloy properties by proper processing when needed.
