Course contents (core content level)

Structures of buildings and facades, substrate materials and their condition
Physical functioning of facade structures
Internel and atmospheric stresses on facade structures and coatings
Durability of facades and coatings and the factors affecting on durability
Paints and coatings applicable to wood, concrete and rendering coat surfaces
Typical properties of facade paints and coatings
Paint specification and painting contract
Arrangements at working site of facade surface treatment, especially scaffolding and lifters
Damaging of facade materials and coatings
Condition inspection and condition research
Planning and performing the facade renovation
Cost formation and calculation of facade surface treatments
Quality assuarance of facade surface treatments and renovation of facades

Development of facade structures from in situ concrete to element production
Industrially produced facade surfaces
Balcony structures
Water penetration and watervapour transmission in paint and coating
Identifying the paint type
Research of damaged concrete and wood and coating
Analysing the results of condition research and inference making
Quality-, environment- and safety systems

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

The student is expected to know
- the structures and materials of modern facades and facades to be renovated
- stress factors affecting on facade surfaces
- properties of paints and materials used in facades
The student is expected to be able to
- select the durable and proper surface treatment taking into account the internal and atmospheric stresses
- prepare the surface treatment specification, usage of materials and amount of work and time (project management)
- calculate the costs
- take into account the health and safety at work place
- perform condition inspection and research and prepare the document of these with recommendation of renovation

Core content level learning outcomes (skills)

The student is expected to be able to
- analyse the properties of facade paints and coatings
- analyse the samples taken from old facades by proper methods
- perform the repair of damaged and corroded reinforced concrete
- plan and manage, after practice, facade coating and renovation projects
