Physical chemistry KEML0037
Physical chemistry laboratory course KEMLP0011
Corrosion Protection, continuation course P0072

Course contents (core content level)

Thermodynamics of electrochemical reactions, cell and reaction potential, electrochemical series.

Kinetics of electrochemical reactions, conductivity of solutions.

Electrochemical basis of corrosion, Pourbaix diagram, passivation, Evans diagrams, principles of corrosion prevention.

Experimental arrangement of electrochemical measurements. Potential maesurements, voltametry, potentiostatic and galvanostatic methods. Interpretation of measurement results and utilisation of the results in assesment of corrosion behaviour.

Course contents (additional)

Physical basis of the electrode potential.

Impedance, CER and electrochemical noise methods.

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

Students will comprehend the laws dominating electrochemical cell reactions and their thermodynamic basis. They will fully understand the signifigance of electrochemical series as the basis of the mutual corrosion behaviour of materials. They will know the main corrosion measuring methods and their utilisation in assesment of corrosion behaviour.

Core content level learning outcomes (skills)

Students will be able to select an appropriate corrosion measuring method, to carry out common corrosion tests and to discuss the results.
