Focus, aim and importance of maintenance. Generation of failures, technical maintenance operations, maintenance policies, operational reliability, maintenace profits and costs, organisation of maintenance.

Maintenance development concepts, means to reduce maintenance needs, key figures, logistics, information systems, maintenance of buildings.
Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)
After completing the course students will know the economic, safety and environmental aims of maintenance. They will comprehend that failures have different generation modes. They will know the meaning of operational monitoring, condition monitoring, scheduled and corrective maintenance and decommissioning.
The students will comprehend that maintenance is devided into sensory, measuring, statistical and continuous maintenance. They understand fully how selection between repair of malfunctions and preventive maintenance depends on the item. They will know what is meant with operational reliability and comprehend the factors affecting it. They will know how the costs of maintenance are built up and what kind of profits can be achieved by it. They will know the alternatives to organize maintenance work.
