Course contents (core content level)

The characteristics of formal and informal style and language; the essentials of technical and writing, including structuring and producing a formal report, the basics of using and documenting source material, and paraphrasing and summarising field-specific texts; use of tables and figures; professional letters and messages; ethical issues in communication; oral presentations; job application process; meetings (as a participant).

Course contents (additional)

Revising one?s own texts; evaluating the reliability of source material, especially on-line sources; improving the style and quality of one?s oral and written presentations, chairing a meeting.

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

On completion of the course the student will have a basic knowledge of formal and informal language usage, the conventions of technical and writing, the use and documentation of source material, ethical issues in on-line and off-line communication, especially plagiarism; cross-cultural communication.

Core content level learning outcomes (skills)

On completion of the course the student will be able to: produce technical documents, such as a structured formal report based on source material, document the references appropriately, paraphrase and summarise source material, and avoid plagiarism; plan and give formal oral presentations, individually and in groups, and give and receive feedback on presentations; write a letter of application and a CV and survive a job interview; act as a participant at a meeting.
