Prerequisites

Either secondary school (ninth grade) mathematics and Preparatory course (MATLV0052) in mathematics or upper secondary school mathematics (advanced course level)

Course contents (core content level)

Simplifying mathematical expressions and solving typical equations in engineering sciences. The concept of a function, composite function and inverse function. Plotting functions and simple transformations of them. Coordinate system, straight line, parabola and other basic functions. Trigonometric functions, rectangular triangle, and trigonometric equations in solving angles of triangles. Exponential and logarithmic functions and basic related equations. The basics of matrix?, determinants, and applications. Plane vectors and their applications, e.g. in geometrical and physical problems. Space vectors and their applications, straight line and plane in 3-dimensional spaces and their applications in media-engineering.

Course contents (additional)

Basic geometric rules and operations in 2D and 3D. Gauss? elimination, Cramer?s rule. Solving more complicated trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic equations. Using letters and symbols of complex numbers. The student should become familiar with mathematical software e.g. Maple.

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

The student knows the basic methods of simplification and solving equations. He/she recognizes the plots of the most common functions in media -engineering. The student knows how to apply vectors, straight lines and planes. He/she is able to use artificial intelligence in solving mathematical and technical problems. The student also understands the rules of mathematical visualization.

Core content level learning outcomes (skills)

The student is able to visualize with pen and paper the most common functions in media-engineering. The student is familiar with simplifying mathematical expressions and to solve simple equations and systems of equations. He/she is able to use vectors in various applications. The student can e.g. plot functions and solve equations with Maple.
