Prerequisites

Course contents (core content level)

Tasks of packages in the distribution chain of foodstuffs and the demands of different transport vehicles to packages. Packaging materials; different plastics and laminates, carton, metal and glass and their abilities to allow water and gases to permeate. The demands which different foodstuffs set on packages. Aseptic, vacuum and gas packaging, active and intelligent packages and environmental issues in food packaging.

Food control system in Finland. To create package labeling according to legislation (act on food labeling, the regulation of ministry of trade and industry on food labeling, the regulation of ministry of trade and industry on informing the name and ingredients, the regulation of ministry of trade and industry on the nutrients of foodstuffs).

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

After completion of this course the student understands the meaning of package from the point of view of food preservation, distribution chain and informing customers. The student knows working habits and demands of food industry as a packager of raw materials and final products.

After completion of this course the student can chouse a packaging material beneficial to preservation for some foodstuffs and can plan suitable package labeling for a food product.
