Course contents (core content level)

This course covers topics such as traditional gilding methods; gloss gilding, oil gilding and silvering. Students practise these methods through various assignments. Students acquire information about medieval methods and decoration techniques used in Southern and Northern Europe (sgraffito decoration, repousse-technique, engraving) as well as the pigments typical of the era. Practical assignments are based on copying the medieval works of art (paintings, altarpieces, polychrome sculptures).

This course is designed to give information about medieval texts and newer texts dealing with gilding. Students will have a good command of the materials, tools and methods used in gilding. Basic gilding techniques will be acquired through practical assignments.
