Basics of conservation chemistry, Organic chemistry, Documentation I, Introduction to Photography.
Course contents (core content level)
During Documentation I each student has photographed and written a documentation report of one icon. Now students will gain a good command of both deterioration process and their birth mechanisms. Also the cleaning materials and methods used in conservation as well as applying putty, insulation and retouch materials and techniques will be discussed. This course is one of the first courses to be taken among conservation courses and will serve as an introduction to many advanced courses, familiarising students with the spectrum of conservation meterials and methods.

Practical part of the course covers documentation and conservation tasks allowing students to develop their skills in traditional materials of icon painting as well as gaining knowledge of the deterioration process. Students will acquire basic knowledge and skills in restoration of art painted on a wooden support.
