Course contents (core content level)

An introduction to painting materials. The course covers the historical development and properties of painting materials. Students will learn to make tempera, oil, gouache, acryl and wax paints and different grounds.The course also covers making of varnishes. The propertiesd and reactions of the prepared materials will be discussed as well as information about the cross-sections and how to further develop the information acquired. Students are asked to work in groups as well as individually. Different individual tasks based on the materials prepared will be given.

This course provides the students with general knowledge of the manufacture of painting materials from the historical and contemporary point of view as well as information about the consistency and properties of painting materials.
