Course contents (core content level)

This course is delivered through practical projects which allow students to develop their previously learned skills (Gilding, Historical paintig techniques, Materials) as well as gain new information. Different conservation methods (cleaning, consolidating, applying putty, retouching) will be discussed as this course serves as an introduction to advanced courses. Also the birth mechanisms of deterioration and preserve conditions before and after conservation work will be discussed.

This course will provide the students with information about conservation of art painted on wood (paintings, polychrome sculptures). Students will gain information about different materials, manufacturing technology, conservation materials as well as analysing/reseaching the materials.

Teaching and learning strategies

Lectures, one individual work (possibly as a groupwork) with a help of a tutor. A visit to Stockholm, to the department of Conservation at the Museum of National Antiquities. We will there take a closer look at their collections of art painted on wood and the conservation methods. Each student will give a Powerpoint presentation based on the articles/literature chosen by the teacher.

Assessment weighting and grading

Assessment is based on the outcome of the pactical conservation project and the level of independence in which students work. Ability to solve problems, co-operation and the presentation are also important parts of the assessment.
