Course contents (core content level)
This course covers the history of Oriental and European paper, the arrival of paper in Europe and the development of European paper manufacturing industry. Terminology of paper-making will be discussed. Visits to paper factory and different conservation institutes. The course provides the students with an opportunity to make paper and get familiarised with the objects which are to be restored. Students are asked to write an essay based on a topic chosen together by using literature searches and give a short presentation.

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)
Students will acquire information about the long history of paper as well as the development of manufacturing techniques. Through visits and different object presentations students explore the vast object variety in paper conservation. Ethical aspects will also be discussed. Students learn to make individual literature searches depending on their topic.

Lectures, visits to paper factory and conservation institutes, individual work, essay writing and a presentation for student's own peer group. Group discussions on the objects and deterioration of paper conservation as well as conservation methods.
