Descriptions

Prerequisites

Conservation of gilded surfaces - theory part, incl. history of frames, from spring term 2006. Chemistry and material courses from the 1. and 2. study year.

Course contents (core content level)

During this part of the course students learn about basic gilding techniques, learn to recognise the main mechanisms of decay and deterioration in frames and will be introduced to different materials and techniques used in gilded frames, incl. patination.

Course contents (additional)

Cleaning of frames, making missing decorative elements, filling and different retouching techniques are part of the course. Students make as individual task different surface decoration and patination models for their private use as reference material.

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

Students will obtain basic knowledge about gilding (watergilding, oil gilding, other metals in gilding), tools and materials used in gilding. Students will understand the means and methods in conservation - restoration of gilded frames and frames with other surface treatment.

Students have the basic knowledge about cleaning of frames with different surface decoration (gilded, silvered, painted), know how to restore missing parts of the frame and to conserve different surfaces of frames 8incl. patination).
