Prerequisites
First and second year studies in textile conservation. Identification and technology of leather.
Course contents (core content level)
Deterioration of leather. Impact of manufacturing methods and environmental factors on leather and its deterioration. Possibilities of reshaping of deformed leather, consolidation and repair techniques and materials of leather. Cleaning methods. Dying and finishing of leather.

Conservation of leather and textiles containing leather, conservation of fur.
Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)
The student will be able to identify different deterioration mechanisms of leather. The student knows how to reshape, clean, consolidate, dye different types of leather. The student knows material applicable in for leather conservation (consolidation, repair, dying, sewing, finishing materials and techniques). The student will know the requirements of preventive conservation for leather artefacts.
Core content level learning outcomes (skills)
The student will be able to reshape and consolidate a leather object taking into consideration the specific requirements of leather as material and the requirements caused by historic manufacturing processes. The student will be able to repair and sew by hand, can use appropriate methods for conservation dying/retouching and finishing of leather materials.
