Illustration, Publishing programs, PC operating environment and communication, Typography II and Book Design.

Course contents (core content level)

An advanced study of the history of book and book design. The course also covers the effects book graphics and fonts have on readability and style. Symmetric and asymmetric typographic will also be discussed as well as tradition and its meaning for book design. We will also take a look at setting graphic guidelines and illustrating a fictional book. Papers, layout and cover materials as well as graphic technology and the ten most common mistakes in book design will be discussed. The course also covers the basics of printing technology as well as printing methods aimed at different printing products, planning the schedule, bid making, printing process, matters of responsibility and a business-like complaint handling.

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

The aim of this course is to introduce the student to different roles of book, different genres and the effects they have on book design. We will also discuss tradition and its meaning for book design. Upon completion the student will have a good command of the basic methods of book design and illustration as well as the graphic technology in book design.The student learns about the collaboration between graphic reproduction institutes and printing houses.
