Course contents (core content level)

The various functions of books, different genres and their influence in font desing.
Advanced history of book and book design (symmetric and asymmetric book typography).
The significance of tradition in book design.
Choice of typography and it's influence in readability and style of the book.
The basic history of illustrated book
The choice of paper, binding format, covers and wrapping
The design and illustration of a book
Graphical technologies: The appropriate methods and materials for various print formats, schedule planning, invitation of bids, project work flow, responsibilities and claims.

Preparing the graphical guidelines for a book
Fiction text analysis for the use of illustration design

Core content level learning outcomes (knowledge and understanding)

After the course the student has a knowledge of the different genres of book design and illustration and understands their cultural and communicational roles. He understands the significance of tradition in book design and is familiar with the essentials of book typography. He has advanced knowledge of the history of books, book graphics and illustration towards which he has an vivid interest.
After the course is fluent with the graphical technology needed for book design and creation. He has basic knowledge of how the publishing line of business works.

Core content level learning outcomes (skills)

After the course the student knows how to design and illustrate books either for the publishing company or as a freelancer. He is able to perform various book typography and illustration tasks and is cabable of marketing his proficiency.
