Sisältö (ydinaines ja -osaaminen)

Market access for businesses under the rules of the World Trade Organisation and the ancillary Regional Trade Organisations will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on the obligation and enforcement of the main market access rules of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994, the European Community and the Asean Free Trade Area.

The course will conclude with an overview of the main legal principles governing cross-border business practices, focusing on contracts, commercial law and taxation.

The course aims to give the student an overview and an understanding of the legal aspects governing the structure of and business practices within international trade to benefit private business.

Upon completing this course the student will be able to:
* understand the means by which market access rules are enforced
* understand the principles of international taxation
* understand the effect of regional legislation on international trade

* compare the different approaches and objectives of different trading systems
* identify the main market access rules of different trading systems
* apply the principles of international contract law
* apply the principles of international commercial law - sale of goods

Literature and Reference listings are subject to change according to current needs. The lecturer will notify of any changes.

Opetusmenetelmät

The module will consist of lectures, student presentations, discussions and small group work as needs may require. Students will be given original texts in the form of case reports, treaty provisions and other documents to examine. It is intended that the teaching and learning methods will comprise a substantial element of student participation. Students will be expected to carry out prescribed reading or research to enable them to actively participate in class activities.

Ovi Portaali will be used extensively as a teaching tool and learning resource.

Arvioinnin perusteet

In order to pass this module the student must obtain a minimum of 45% from the composite grade for the module (100%). The assessment weighting is stipulated below.

Assessment 2 30%
Assessment 3 40%

Attendance
Students are permitted to be absent from a total of 20% of the scheduled number of contact sessions. Any absences in excess thereof shall be accompanied by reasonable documentary evidence. Any unauthorised absence is subject to a total of 10% deduction from the final grade.

Attendance is compulsory at all assessment sessions (and at any other session which may be designated by the lecturer).
