Compulsory for all European Management and EBA (British route) students.

Sisältö (ydinaines ja -osaaminen)

In this course, students will develop and improve their existing writing and study skills on an interpersonal level. The course will prepare and equip the student for study on an international business degree programme both in Finland and the UK. Students will also learn the main aspects of academic writing.

Sisältö (täydentävä ja erityisosaaminen)

Academic and analytical writing, study and exam techniques, referencing, working in groups, an introduction to presentation skills, analysing individual skills and competencies, using the library and database resources.

Tiedolliset oppimistulokset (ydinaines ja -osaaminen)

By the end of the course, students will have improved their writing and study skills and have gained the tools necessary to develop these further. They will have a general understanding of the principles of academic and collaborative writing for bachelors study both in Finland and the UK. Students will also have learned the basics of giving oral presentations in class.

Aims
The course aims to improve the style, register, clarity, coherence, appearance and grammatical accuracy of the student's academic and general writing in English. Students will identify, clarify and eliminate individual problem areas in their writing such as; use of punctuation, prepositions, reported speech, word order, participle clauses, tenses, adverbs, conjunctions. The course methodology aims to make the students better editors of their own writing and so more self-sufficient as writers.

By the end of the course, students will:
* know their personal strengths and weaknesses with regard to writing in English in an academic and study context
* understand the writing process and the differences in register between oral and written academic English
* have learned the importance of planning, organising, drafting, writing and editing accurate, clear and well-presented academic assignments
* have learned how to reference sources
* know the basics of how to structure and give effective oral presentations
* have improved their individual study skills

Opetusmenetelmät

The course will include a variety of methodologies; lectures, class discussions, group work, seminars, extempore presentations, individual and group writing assignments, practice in the computer labs and homework assignments.
EM and EBAW students can start work on their own communication portfolio for development in the spring semester, which will give them the opportunity to work according to their own individual written communication needs.

Arvioinnin perusteet

Students will be expected to participate actively in all aspects of the course and complete each writing assignment. Assessment will be weighted as follows;

Academic writing assignments 80%
Personal development, self-assessment, continuous assessment, class participation 20%
