Goals

The aims of the language studies at EVTEK are prescribed in Polytechnics Decree (352/2003). According to this decree, the student must, through the studies included in the polytechnic degree or otherwise, prove to have attained

1. 1) such knowledge of Finnish and Swedish language as required in the Act on the Knowledge of Languages Required of Personnel in Public Bodies (424/2003) of state personnel who are required to have an academic degree, in bilingual authorities, and which is necessary for the practise of the profession and professional development, and

2. 2) such oral and written skills in at least one or two foreign languages necessary for the practise of the profession and for professional development

Common Core Study Units

Engineering education includes Finnish language and communication studies (5 credit points) and English language and communication studies (7 credit points) and Swedish studies (3 credit points).

Study units of other languages can also be included in the degree.

English

Students who have no upper secondary level studies in English or whose grade in Matriculation Examination is approbatur, will, when starting their studies, participate in an exam where their language skill level will be defined. The extent of the language studies required from the students is determined by this level test. If the test result is poor, the student must participate in Threshold Grammar study unit (3 credit points). This course improves the general abilities in the English language.

English studies are divided into two study units: English for Working Life and Technology (4 credit points) and study field specific English, for example English for Automation Engineering or English for Building Services Engineering (3 credit points). These studies focus on the language used in working life of the field in question.

In adult education all students participate in the level test in the entrance examination. If the test result is poor, the student must participate in the web-based Introduction to Engineering English study unit (3 credit points). This course improves the general abilities in the English language. Other English study units (7 credit points) are implemented in the form of workshop studies.

Swedish

Students, who have no upper secondary level studies in Swedish or whose grade in Matriculation Examination is approbatur, will, during their first academic year, participate in an exam where their language skill level will be defined. If the test result is poor, the student must participate in the Threshold Swedish study unit (3 credit points). This course improves the general abilities in the Swedish language.

The extent of other Swedish language studies is 3 credit points: Professional Swedish, which is implemented during second or third academic year, depending on the degree programme. By completing the Professional Swedish study unit acceptably the student will attain the Swedish language skills required by the Language Act.

In adult education the Swedish level test is arranged in degree programmes to all students in the beginning of the studies. If the test result is poor, the student must participate in Inledning till studier i teknisk svenska study unit (3 credit points). This course improves the general skills in the Swedish language. By completing the Professional Swedish study unit (3 credit points) acceptably the student will attain the Swedish language skill required by the Language Act.

Competence Based Test in Swedish
Those students who have good Swedish language skills can take a competence based test. The exam is on Wednesday 9.11.2005 at 4.00 p.m. The exam room will be notified later. This test is arranged only once a year. By completing this test acceptably, the student can prove to have attained the knowledge in the Swedish language required by the Language Act (424/2003). This test is graded with good/satisfactory. The acceptable completion of the test will exempt the student from the Swedish language studies at EVTEK. This test can be taken only once.

English Degree Programmes

Finnish students studying in the English Degree Programmes will study Finnish language and communication, Swedish and English according to the study plan. The foreign students in the Degree Programme study Finnish as a second language and English. The students in the English Degree Programmes take the English language test in connection with the entrance examination; therefore, Threshold Grammar study unit is not included in their studies.

Optional Language Studies

Optional studies include various English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Estonian study units. In the beginning of a semester, information on the study unit choices is placed on the Language and Communication notice board and on the Internet (www.evtek.fi/tekniikka/laitokset/kielet).
