Exam Practices

Institute of Technology

During the exam period following the study unit, an exam will be held where the student shows to have attained the knowlegde of the study unit. There is no registration for the the exams during the exam week after teaching period.

Outside the exam period two or three additional resit exams will be arranged for each study unit. Students can resit a failed exam only twice in the next two resit exams after the study unit has ended. If the student fails in these exams he/she must participate in the study unit again. If a student fails, without acceptale grounds, to attend in an exam he/she has registered for, the student is considered to have used this resit opportunity. Registration for the resit exams is made by filling in an exam envelope available at the caretaker’s and info desk. The exam envelope will be returned to the caretaker desk latest10 days before the exam. A separate envelope is needed for each exam and these envelope must not be closed. In the exam the student must prove his/her identity. The dates for the resit exams are in the section ‘Academic Year’ in this guide. The teacher will notify the exam results within two weeks from the exam date. The results will be placed on the notice boards of the degree programmes. A study unit can be accepted only after all the parts of the study unit (laboratory and project work, exercises and exams) have been completed and accepted. It is in the teacher’s consideration whether the exam answers will be returned. If the exam papers will not be returned the student has right to see his/her exam answers. The exam papers will be retained six months after the grading.

School of Business Administration

1.Students must arrive at the examination latest 15 minutes (in Evening studies 30 minutes) after the exam time has started. If a student arrives at the examination more than 15 minutes late, the student will lose the right to participate in the exam and also loses this exam occasion. There will be no exceptions of this rule.

2.All bags, coats, notebooks, books etc. must be left at the back of the exam room. Only those items that are separately mentioned in the exam paper are allowed on the desk.

Mobile phones must be swithed off and left in the bag or somewhere else out of sight and reach. Also Walkmans and other similar devices must be left at the back of the exam room.

3. It is mentioned in the exam question sheet what extra material is allowed in the exam.

4.Students can leave the exam room earliest after 15 minutes from the begininng of the exam (in Evening studies resit exams after 30 minutes). A student may not leave the exam room temporarily without the invigilator’s permission.

7.In cases of cheating the invigilator will dismiss the student from the exam and report the cheating to the examiner and to the Disciplinary Board. The Disciplinary Board will propose a decision on this matter to the Rector. Cheating in an exam will lead to failure in the exam. Cheating may also lead to temporary loss of the study right.

10.Students are entitled to raise the grade of a study unit once if this has been agreed with the teacher of the study unit. This can be done in the autumn of the following year earliest.

11 After the exam the teacher has four (4) weeks time to check and evaluate the exams and to save the gradings to Winha system. After resit exams this time is two (2) weeks. Holiday periods for students are added to this evaluation time. The four week evaluation and checking time also applies to other course assignments, starting from the deadline set for the assignment in the assessment rules.

The point system is supplemented with the following scale: K5 (80–100 points), H4 (70–79 points), H3 (60–69 points), T2 (50–59 points) and T1 (40–49 points). Gradings less than 40 points are failed. Students can see the evaluation of their exams during the reception hours of the teacher of the study unit.

Maturity test can also be taken for example on the resit exam days for day and evening studies, when this has been agreed with the supervisor. The student registeres for the maturity test directly to the supervisor.

14.Students near graduation, missing only the exam of a study unit, can discuss the completion of the study unit with the principal lecturer. This can be done if the student is missing only one compulsory study unit and if the Bachelor’s Thesis has been completed.
