DEGREE PROGRAMME IN MEDIA STUDIES

Visual communication media are based on design requiring professional expertise. It contains both traditional printed media and digital applications in network and multimedia; all design in new media. There are two specialisation alternatives in the Degree Programme: Graphic Design and 3D Visualisation.

A Bachelor of Media in Graphic Design in most cases works in expert or supervisory duties related to visualisation in industrial printing or as an independent entrepreneur. He designs and implements orders from marketing and graphic design companies, publishing companies, private companies and public institutions. Their field of work contains for example, book graphics, corporate graphics, illustration, package design, Internet pages and multimedia. Their know-how is based on information technology and artistic education – not forgetting the basic skills in business and communication. The practical training period creates solid grounds for the future employment.

A Bachelor of Media specialised in 3D visualisation is an expert in fields connected to digital 3D visualisation and modelling of virtual environment. Additionally, content design, production and product development for new media belong to this expertise field. They often work in architectural and design offices, in advertising or in film or game industry.


Goals of the Degree Programme

The objective of the Media Degree Programme is to provide the students with versatile abilities to work in different fields of visualisation. The students are also guided in oral and written communication, also for the needs in international operation. The aim is to educate professionals with cooperation and communication skills who are also able to take the commercial point of view into consideration. The education also creates abilities for research and development work serving regional needs and future challenges.


Studies

The normative duration of the studies for the Bachelor of Media degree is four years (240 credit points). The degree programme comprises basic studies, professional studies, optional studies, practical training, maturity test and Bachelor’s Thesis. The students can also participate in international student exchange. The Bachelor’s Thesis may include also an artistic production in addition to the written thesis. The general studies and basic art studies in the two specialisation fields are the same; specialisation is based on different contents and technologies in professional studies.

The studies are in the form of lectures and assignments and project work. This requires that the students are interested in their field of study, active and motivated to work independently.


Specialisation Fields

Graphic Design

In this specialisation field the student concentrates on the design of printed media and digital media. The studies include theory of visual expression and thinking, information on the production processes in graphic industry, programmes and operating systems used in their design, practical assignments in art subjects and in professional studies and basic information on business operations.

3D Visualisation

3D modelling, digital image and sound, visual simulation and animation are emphasised in the studies. Also study modules of graphic design, architecture, stage design and film related studies are included in the studies. Assignments are given emphasis in professional studies.


Practical Training and Bachelor’s Thesis

The degree requirements contain practical training (30 credit points), which is completed during the third study year. Practical training has also been implemented in cooperation with the employers of the neighbouring municipalities for example with publishing houses, architect and advertising agencies, game production companies and other media organisations. The students will write a report on the practical training according to the instructions of the department.

Bachelor’s Thesis (15 credit points) is an extensive design, research or survey project which may include an artistic production. Working life based Bachelor’s Theses will cover a subject field agreed with the employer. The principal lecturer of the degree programme will approve the subject field. The subject field can also be chosen by the student. In this case the students will concentrate on a sector of their artistic production or will complete an extensive thesis on the field of media. Bachelor’s Thesis and practical training familiarise the students with independent information search and practical tasks.
