DEGREE PROGRAMME IN DESIGN

The degree studies in design contain textile design, fashion design, industrial design and interior design. The extent of the Bachelor of Culture and Arts studies is 240 credit points and the studies take four years. The two year adult programme is aimed to working professionals of the field.

The challenging structural changes, latest technology of the field and increasing internalisation have been taken into consideration in the planning of the education. The focus of the starting groups will be changed approximately every third year and the curricula of all the groups are renewed every year.


Goals of the Degree Programme

The aim of the Design Degree Programme is to provide the students with versatile skills and know-how for the expert duties in textile design, fashion design, industrial design and interior design as well as for practical assignments in the field.

Studies

The studies are focused on materials and life-cycle thinking, form giving, management of production methods as well as on creative problem solving, professional communication, group work and interpersonal skills, economic thinking and management of new technology. The studies also include visual expression, design and professional IT applications.

Various work experience projects and working life connected Bachelor’s Thesis strengthen the working life aspect of the studies. Practical training in the companies of the field in Finland or abroad builds the student’s professional identity. Part of the instruction is given in English by the visiting lecturers from other countries. The degree includes also language studies and the possibility to participate in international student exchange.

Specialisation Fields

Interior Oriented Textile Design

The studies focus on interior textiles and provide the basic knowledge of the visual design of surfaces and interiors, different textile materials, composition, colour theory, creative expression, product design, interior design and materials, textile production design and marketing. Studies include design and production of printed, woven and knitted material and also the significance and possibilities of textiles in interior decoration are covered. The students are acquainted with computer aided design, digital production methods, industrial design and production of textiles and with subcontracting and coordination of textile collections. The studies also cover the basics of interior design and 3D space design. The studies include also working life projects, practical training periods and the possibility to studies abroad.

Fashion Design, Business Orientated

The Business Orientated Fashion Design studies emphasise economic, result oriented and customer oriented thinking from the point of view of sustainable development. The studies cover the principles of business and the requirements for successful operation as entrepreneur or employee in a company or other organisation. New clothing and material technology, information technology, production methods and production channels in clothing production, marketing communications and channels and teamwork and interpersonal skills are also studied.

Industrial Design

The Industrial Design studies prepare students to work as members in different product development teams and tasks. The aim of the studies is to teach students to understand product and service design in a business context. The studies focus on creative problem solving, materials, 3D modeling and user-centered design.

Interior Design

The Interior Design studies prepare students to work as interior, lightning and furniture designers in both the public and the private spaces. The studies focus on practical and ecological design. The aim of the studies is to develop designers who are able to link design and technical know-how to business.

Practical Training and Bachelor’s Thesis

The degree requirements include practical training (30 credit points), which will be completed in most cases during third and fourth study year in companies of this field in Finland or abroad.

Bachelor’s Thesis (15 credit points) will be written in the last study year. The Thesis is an extensive design, research or survey project which the student will carry out independently. Bachelor’s Thesis is in most cases written on a topic given by a company and it is the student's most important work which, together with the practical training, familiarises the student with practical duties.
