Student Exchange

What Is Student Exchange?

Student exchange is a way to study one semester or full academi cyear at one of partner institutions of higher education abroad of your study field. The credits earned at the host institution are recognised towards your degree. Exchange students participate in the regular teaching program and follow educational arrangements at their student exchange host institutions of higher education. In some cases, the host institution organises additional orientation and/or language courses for exchange students. EVTEK has study field specific student and teacher exchange agreements with more than 140 higher education institutions in Europe, Nordic countries, Asia, Canada and Russia. The exchange agreements guarantee that exchange students are exempted from tuition fees at the host institution.

Students of EVTEK accepted to participate in student exchange programmes do not pay tuition fees to the host institution and they normally receive a grant to cover some of the costs arising from studying abroad. Knowledge of a wide range of languages is not always required as some host institutions teach courses in English for exchange students. Nevertheless we warmly recommend studying in the local language of your country of choice.

Why Student Exchange?

The student exchange offers almost unlimited opportunities and gives you experiences which may benefit you in every area of life. At its best, studying abroad is a mind-expanding experience - besides good language skills – it gives you important skills to prepare you for your future career. Student exchange improves not only your language skills but also increases your intercultural competence, knowledge of the host country and culture, and provides contacts that are fun and useful both in Finland and abroad. Depending on your field of study and your interests you may find interesting courses to complement the range of courses provided at your home institution. You may even be able to include subjects to your degree programme that are not available in Finland at the moment. International experience is also a trump card valued by employers. Student exchange also provides an opportunity to become independent and to grow as an individual as through learning about other cultures you may learn much about yourself, about your attitudes and values. A successful experience abroad makes you open-minded, tolerant and considerate of others and to their backgrounds.

When Should I Go?

Depending on the field of study, students usually go on exchange during the third year of study. But it is possible to apply for student exchange if you have completed at least one year of studies before the beginning of the student exchange. Students can go on student exchange for one semester or a full academic year. Projects and other similar programmes normally last from three to twelve months. To get the most out of your experience abroad you need to have a good basic knowledge in your field of study before going on exchange. You should also pay attention to the language studies: if you go to a non-English speaking country it is recommended to know at least the basics of the language of the host country. It is important that the student, prior to exchange, is capable for independent life, is in good shape financially and personally and above all – he is willing to go abroad.
