Financing

You should keep in mind that the exchange studies are based, first of all, on self-financing. Financial aid and grants are only a welcome addition to it. Student exchange grant procedures of Metropolia for the academic year 2008-2009 are yet undefined.

Financial Aid for Students

Students entitled to the student financial aid from The Social Insurance Institution in Finland (KELA) can apply financial aid for the studies abroad if the studies are part of the degree at the home institution. Studies have to be full-time which means they have to progress at least 4,8 ECTS credits per aid month. This rule applies also to the exchange studies.

Monthly rates:

  • Housing supplement 210 euros (except in the low-cost countries in Eastern Europe)
  • Study grant 259,01 euros
  • Student loan 440 euros

Please fill the application form (Otm) of KELA, which are available at the student affairs office or www.kela.fi. The exchange study days that need to be mentioned in the application are those days which the exchange institute has informed. The certificate of the studies abroad needs to be attached to the application. You can get it from the International Office of your home institution. You can leave the application to the Student Affairs Office or send it to the Student Financial Aid Centre of KELA. Please note that the handling time of the applications are usually several weeks!

During an extension year the student financial aid is granted for the studies abroad only if the studies abroad are necessary for the graduation. The statement of the director of the degree programme needs to be attached to the application.

More information: www.kela.fi, Ovi-portal

PLEASE NOTICE that a student is responsible for getting minimum annual amount of ECTS credits in order to avoid problems with the Student Financial Aid!

Student Grants

The grants distrubuted by Metrpolia are tax free income. A student is not obligated to inform the Student Financial Aid Committee about the grants provided for exchange study abroad or about other similar financial support. The Erasmus and Nordplus student grants and the travel grant distributed by EVTEK for studying abroad are examples of such grants. This applies to studies in Finland during which a student participates in student exchange abroad. Grants are intended to partly cover the extra costs arising from studying abroad.

LLP Erasmus Grant

Metropolia receives Erasmus grant from the Eropean Union for distribution to those students whose student exchange institution has signed the Erasmus Bilateral Agreement with Metropolia. The amount of the LLP Erasmus Student Grant varies from academic year to year. The amount of the grant for the academic year 2008-2009 will be confirmed by August, 2008.

Nordplus Grant

The amount of the Nordplus grant varies from academic year to year. A scholarship can be granted to a basic degree student for a period from one to ten months.
